ancient Maya world. The Mexican government has recognized the importance of this
region and is investing in many new projects, including the Mayan train. Consequently,
this region is experiencing rapid growth.
SO WHY INVEST IN THE YUCATAN
For the last 25 years tourism has grown in Mexico nationally and internationally,
especially in the Yucatan. Many Mexicans now have the money to travel and to explore
their own culture and country
The reality is the “Yucatan” has it all
Beautiful beaches, the Caribbean, with all the attractions of snorkeling, diving, deep
sea fishing, the Gulf of Mexico with the flamingoes and whale watching, Cenotes,
Colonia cities, excellent museums, Maya ruins, old haciendas, some still making
hessian, beautiful churches, local villages hundreds of years old, women still getting
fresh corn to make tortillas, old markets. Towns still steeped in the traditions of the past.
Calakmul, a UNESCO heritage site, is the INDIANA JONES lost city in the JUNGLE. Set
in the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere, the largest in Mexico, it is home to one of the
largest maya cities ever built. In 1994, 6,400. Permanent structures were mapped, but
recent LIDER scanning has shown the city is at least 3 times larger than originally
thought. As well as Calakmul and many other ruins, the Biosphere is home to 5 of the
big cats, tapirs, small mammals, crocodiles, bats, over 200 species of birds, snakes, and
hundreds of different orchids.
For ruins LOVERS, the list in this region is long. This was the heart of the MAYA world
in the 4/5/6 centuries .Easily reached are Becan, Chicana, Balakmu, Xpujil,
Hormiguero, Kohunlich, Dzibanche, Tohcoh, Hochob, Santa Rosa Xtampax as well
many off-road like Rio Bec.
The Gulf of Mexico has many small, truly Mexican towns, where locals go about their
daily business and are happy to talk to a tourist who has gone off the beaten track. For
fish lovers, this region has the freshest fish in Mexico and the quietest beaches.
Campeche city is a real find, with its Bulartes (forts from the 17/18 century, protecting
the city from pirates), which are all now turned into Museums. FORT SAN MIGUEL
houses all the artifacts found in the tombs at Calakmul, the city of Campeche is 100 %
different from Merida. More laid back, much smaller and less touristy
Merida “THE WHITE CITY” is “a destination”, with not only many tourist attractions, but
excellent restaurants, busier than Campeche, but still a lovely city to visit, and has now
become one of the top 10 cities in the world to retire to.
